The IIHS recently conducted a small overlap frontal impact test of 13 small SUV's, and it turns out that the 2014 Subaru Forester was the only one rated "good" in this test. We are not surprised though, since Subaru consistently ranks in the top of most safety tests.
This particular test modifies the group's standard offset frontal impact test, in which a car strikes a 5-foot tall barrier at 40 mph. The previous offset test strikes 40 percent of a car's frontal area, while the new test hits just 25 percent. This kind of impact, the IIHS says, occurs in about a quarter of all frontal crashes in which front passengers are seriously or fatally injured.
The Forester's body frame and interior remained largely intact during the crash test, as did that of the Outlander Sport, although the IIHS said that the Subaru offered greater coverage from the side and curtain airbags.
