2019 Subaru Ascent Review & Compare | Boise, Idaho

The Super-Sized Subaru

Subaru models have gained a cult following thanks to their safety features and capabilities, but there has never really been a Subaru that is dedicated to larger families, until now.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent is a three-row SUV that can fit up to eight passengers, making it perfect for a family trip, the vehicle of choice for the carpool, or for bringing the neighborhood kids to their soccer practice. With measurements that other Subaru models can't compete with, there are plenty of reasons to choose the Ascent, and we want to show you them all.

There are four trims for the Ascent - Ascent, Ascent Premium, Ascent Limited, Ascent Touring - to make sure you can be equipped with the ones that will meet the needs of your life. Exterior colors can include Abyss Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Silica, Cinnamon Brown Pearl, Crimson Red Pearl, Magnetite Gray Metallic, Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, and Tungsten Metallic.

An Interior to Fit Everything

There is a lot of passenger space in the Ascent, up to 153.8 cubic feet, so that all of your passengers have the personal space that they need. This is over 50 cubic feet more than the nearest Subaru SUV, proving more space for the passengers to stay comfortable for the duration of your journey.

There are a variety of seating configurations, you can include bench seats or captain's chairs in the second row, then can fold down a variety of the seats to make sure you tailor the space that you need between passengers and cargo.

If you are looking to maximize your cargo space, you can fold down the second and third rows of seating for up to 86.5 cubic feet of cargo space. For a combination of passenger space and cargo space, you can fold down the third row of seats for up to 47.5 cubic feet, and with the third row up, you can have up to 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

With the largest interior of all Subaru models, there is a lot that your passengers would love about being in the 2019 Subaru Ascent.

All of the Right Interior Features

The first notable feature of the interior is that it has nineteen cupholders. While this might seem excessive to some, those of you who travel with children or teens will know that bottles and cans can be left behind, and with room for eight passengers, even if each forgets a bottle in the car there will still be one cupholder for each passenger - with one more open holder to spare.

Technology plays a big part in the equipment that you will find in the Ascent. Choosing a trim above Premium will give you 4G LTE Wi-Fi compatibility, allowing you and your passengers to stay connected at all times, and Subaru STARLINK™ comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so that you can have the easiest access to the most essential apps. You can keep a variety of devices charged with up to eight USB ports spread throughout the cabin.

Part of What Makes Subaru so Popular

One of the main draws to Subaru is that they are known to manufacture some of the safest vehicles on the market. The 2019 Ascent is the only Subaru model that comes standard with EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology to make sure you can be confident whenever you are behind the wheel of this vehicle. The Eyesight® system comes with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning, Pre-Collision Braking, and Pre-Collision Throttle Management, the Ascent looks out for you even if you get distracted for one second.

There are still many systems that you can choose to equip - including the Blind-Spot Detection System and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert systems - to help you always maintain awareness of your surroundings. To get the best view of what is around you, the available Smart Rear-View Mirror helps keep your visibility up when the view is obstructed, and the available 180-Degree Front Camera makes sure the front and sides are just as safe and clear.

Subaru-Specific Designs

There are a lot of features that Subaru models are known for, most notably the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System that allows passengers to maintain the best traction while they are driving. No matter if it is on loose gravel, snow, rain, or ice, you will be able to have the best possible grip in all conditions. This system distributes power to all four wheels, if one starts to slip, the power is redirected to the wheels that are still gripped onto the road. This system is hailed as one of the most impressive All-Wheel Drive systems available, and it comes standard on the Ascent.

Another design feature the Ascent draws from is the Subaru BOXER Engine, which provides a horizontal design and a lower center of gravity. A "normal" engine design causes more vibrations and can offset balance, but the horizontal design has the pistons work together for a smoother ride. The lower center of gravity will help give you better handling, especially around corners, and gives less body roll. A main complaint of the Boxer engine is that it causes a lot of vibrations and noise, but the Ascent was designed to fix that, able to hold onto an essential trait of Subaru models while improving upon the design.

Ascent Performance

There is one engine option for the Subaru Ascent, and it is the most powerful in the Subaru lineup. The Ascent is equipped with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that gives it 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, which is more than the 3.6-liter engine of the Outback and the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine of the Forester XT.

This engine is paired to a Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission to provide a responsive and enjoyable experience whenever you get behind the wheel. While some CVT systems don't simulate shifting well, the one in the Ascent does it very well, making use of the torque in a way that would help you merge onto highways and pass others.

The Ascent also provides a higher towing rating than any other Subaru SUV can provide. When equipped with all of the right gear, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is 2,300 pounds more than the closest competing Subaru SUV.

Being able to carry your passengers and gear, as well as all of the oversized gear, the Ascent is perfect for any vacation that you might want to go on. Many Subaru SUVs are among the most capable on the market, and the 8.7-inches of ground clearance helps you get over just about any obstacle going towards a campsite or to whatever river you plan on visiting.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent Surpasses Our Standards

With all of the parts that are essential to a Subaru, and a variety of features and capabilities that are new to the brand, we are sure that many customers will enjoy being behind the wheel of this model. Being able to handle its own under any condition, an engine that is powerful enough to help you enjoy any highway or road that you end up on, and an interior that passengers will always appreciate, the reasons to choose the 2019 Subaru Ascent are quite compelling.
